Dear Competitors, Coaches, and Families,

Welcome to the Northwest Invitational Taekwondo Championships!

I’m Master Erick Larson, and I have been training, teaching and competing in the Northwest for over 25 years. It has long been my mission to share the values of martial arts—respect, discipline, and perseverance—with students and families throughout our community.

The goal of this tournament is simple: to create a fair, safe, and exciting event where athletes of all levels can test their skills, grow in confidence, and celebrate the spirit of competition together.

Alongside the divisions we all love—Forms, Breaking, and Sparring—I’m proud to introduce a brand-new exhibition event: Flag Sparring. Fast-paced and full of strategy, it’s sure to bring extra energy and excitement to the day!

Thank you for being part of this event and helping make it a positive experience for everyone. Let’s have a great tournament and enjoy the spirit of competition and camaraderie that makes Taekwondo so special.

With respect,
Master Erick Larson

FLAG SPARRING

Ways to Win

  • Secure your opponent’s flags one at a time or force them out of the ring area by pushing them.

  • After any flag is pulled, players are reset and restarted.

  • 2 out of 3 wins.

In case of a tie:

  • One “re-do” may be called by the referee.

  • After that, the referee’s decision is final.

Flag Loss Conditions

The following will result in the loss of one flag:

  • Stepping out of the ring area

  • Falling down (three or more points of contact)

  • Guarding or blocking your own flags

  • Unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct as determined by the referee

The referee’s judgment is final in all rulings.

Rules and Regulations

At the Northwest Invitational, our guiding principle is to create a competitive environment that honors the true spirit of martial arts — respect, integrity, and safety above all else. Every match, division, and performance is an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, demonstrate skill, and grow in both character and discipline.

Competitors are expected to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, treating fellow athletes, referees, and spectators with courtesy and respect at all times.

We encourage every athlete to compete with courage and humility — striving not only for victory, but for the personal growth that comes through honest effort and respect for one’s opponent.
